Winston Arzu, 39, Grade 2 immigration officer of San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, has been arrested and charged with rape and appeared on Thursday afternoon in San Pedro Magistrate's Court.

Arzu is accused of raping a Guatemalan bar attendant in her early twenties on five separate occasions between January 29 and March 7, 2010.

The woman reported to police that Arzu forced sexual intercourse with her against her will on five separate occasions in that period: once on January 13; twice on January 29 at 12:20 a.m. and 3:00 a.m.; once between the 13th and 14th of February, and again on March 7.

The office administrator for the San Pedro branch of Immigration and Nationality was formally arraigned on Thursday before Magistrate Patricia Arana, who took no plea because the charges are indictable.

Arzu was offered bail of $7,000 and two sureties of $3,400. He is being represented by senior counsel Ellis Arnold.
The information to us is that the complainant only came forward with the charges late last week.

The case was adjourned until November 10, 2010.
